There has always been is a sense of cordial connection between my past and present that I will explore forever. It’s the small experiences throughout my life that shape my work today. Drawing on these experiences and applying my knowledge in a new way onto the canvas.

Practicing Progression

I use thick impasto combined with thin glazes. While focusing on limited details of the figure, I let the background fall away into a calming open space. With my first love of drawing, I drag the charcoal across the texture letting my inner child play. This gives me immediate gratification and adds yet another visual element to the piece.

Separating the figures from the backgrounds creates a harmonious arrangement – without the need of too much realistic structures for support. Altogether, this inspires the viewer to contemplate how elements can be combined to influence the experience of the painting as a whole.

Process of Change

After so many years of realistic painting, I have gradually been moving into more a contemporary style. I found it to be simply a matter of giving myself permission to unlearn my past ways of seeing and interpreting. ‘Permission’ may not be the best term, nonetheless, allowing myself to struggle and fall as long as I got up again. It is this act that gives me the nod of inspiration to explore farther. I want to reconnect with what truly ignites me and what truly deserves to stay in my life.
